Barrick Annual General Meeting April 27, 2011

My name is Pieter Basedow. I hold a proxy from Jake Sternberg and am speaking on behalf of the Lawyers Environmental Action Team/Friends of the Earth Tanzania

In May 2009 toxic waste from your gold mine located in North Mara, Tanzania, spilled into River Thigithe. Local villagers alleged that up to 40 people and from 700 to 1,000 herds of livestock died from the contaminated water. Community are still experiencing health problems to date.

Despite Tanzanian NGOs including the Lawyers Environmental Action Team, Foundation Help, Haki Madini, Haki Ardhi and Legal and Human Rights who are based in Dar es Salaam supporting the call from local community to stop your operation in North Mara, NO action has been taken African Barrick Gold for the non-adherence of environmental standards and serious abuse of peoples rights:

Question - Will Barrick agree to stop operations and allow an independent investigation of the North Mara spillage incidence and what will Barrick do to prevent further endangering local peoples right to life in Tanzania?
