Tanzania: Tarime Boy Drowns in Gold Mine Sand Pit

THREE people died in separate incidents in Mara Region including a fifteen-year-old boy identified as Matiko Chacha who drowned in North Mara Mine's Gokona pit, police have said.

According to the Tarime/Rorya Special Zone Police Commander, Mr Justus Kamugisha, the boy, a Standard Six pupil and resident of Nyangoto Village, drowned while collecting gold sand at the mine owned by the Barrick gold extraction company.

Mr Kamugisha said the boy's body was found inside the water pit and preliminary investigations revealed he had trespassed into the mine in search of gold sands.
