Action

Since 2007 ProtestBarrick.net has facilitated Indigenous communities impacted to Barrick Gold's shareholder meeting in Toronto, Canada.

May 2007 was the launch of ProtestBarrick.net and the first action at Barrick Gold's shareholder meeting and a speaking tour with community from Australia and the USA. The action also coincided with the launch of a CorpWatch report, "Barrick's Dirty Secrets: Communities Respond to Gold Mining Impacts Worldwide," which detailed the struggles against Barrick Gold.

In May 2008, 2009 and 2010 the tour grew to include impacted community from Papua New Guinea and Chile. Attending the Barrick Gold shareholder meeting and a speaking tour in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal Indigenous community from Australia, Papua New Guinea and Chile also attended the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

In 2011 the ProtestBarrick.net hosted representatives from Papua New Guinea and Australia. In 2012, ProtestBarrick.net joined forces with Occupy to camp out outside of Barrick AGM. That protest hosted a representative from Tanzania to speak out against Barrick's abuses. In 2013, ProtestBarrick.net released "Debunking Barrick", a comprehensive report examining Barrick's lies and misrepresentations, against the reality that exists next to their mines.

As the campaign has grown so have our networks. What started out with few resources and few people on the ground has grown to a growing movement calling for an end to corporate impunity. This year, we will again protest Barrick at their annual general meeting on April 30, both inside and outside, where a large community of people gather every year seeking justice against this mining companies international crimes.

Open letter to Corporate Knights regarding Barrick's placement at #4 on "Best 50 of 2013"
by ProtestBarrick.net
June 14th, 2013
I am writing in response to your recent "Best 50 of 2013" listing, where you place Barrick Gold in the position of 4th best corporate citizen. You acknowledged that awarding them this honour would stir controversy, as you acknowledge the company has many accusations placed against it for human rights abuses, and even the Chilean government recently shut down its Pascua Lama project due to "environmental irregularities". Still, referencing "publicly disclosed data points that can be compared across companies", you insist that Barrick is a corporate leader.

Approximately 70 people gathered today at a commemoration held for the seven individuals killed in Tanzania at African Barrick Golds North Mara Mine. Public outcry over this violence has been amplified by recent reports that local security/police forces employed by the mine have attempted to ban a memorial ceremony for the deceased. To the horror of many local families, these security forces also stole 5 of the 7 peoples bodies from the mortuary.

Blows to Barrick
by Sakura Saunderseditor protestbarrick.net
February 21st, 2009
Norway's Ministry of Finance announced January 30 that it would exclude mining giant Barrick Gold from the country's pension fund for ethical reasons. One week later, another victory against Barrick in Australia occurred when a judge ruled in favor or Wiradjuri Traditional Owner, Neville "Chappy" Williams, in granting an injunction restraining the proposed expansion of Barrick Gold's mine in Lake Cowal, New South Wales. More significant than the $200 million divested from Barrick, or the delay in Lake Cowal mine's expansion, is the context that these rulings expose: one of deliberate deceit on the part of Barrick Gold, now Canada's largest publicly-traded company.

The meeting was countered by a group of protesters outside and inside the forum; the protesters demanded mandatory regulation of the mining industry and handed out information illustrating the abuses of this industry abroad, including specific critiques of Barrick Gold pointing to their repeated misrepresentation of information in an attempt to appear socially responsible.
