Sergio Campusano, President of the Diaguita Huascoaltinos, statement at the Barrick Gold 2015 AGM

(abajo en espaol)

Please allow me to inform you how not everything Barrick says is the truth. I am Sergio Campuso, President of the Diaguita Huascoltino community in Chile, a community whose water supply and way of life is gravely affected by the Pascua-Lama project. Even though we have been an autonomous indigenous people since time immemorial, neither Barrick nor the Chilean government officially recognise us as such in order to deny us the human rights of an Original People.  We are currently demanding our rights in the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

But as shareholders, you are interested in financial issues. Honestly, the Pascua-Lama project continues spending outrageous amounts of money that will never raise the value of your pocketbook. Your money is being spent uselessly, especially since the latest round of sanctions that the Chilean Superintendent of the Environment has solicited against the company this past 21st of April. These sanctions could result in the loss of Barrick's permit itself. Already, five billion dollars have been spent on a project that is still in development and which may never become productive.

Moreover, the management of the information you receive from Barrick are based on bad practices that are not transparent. Such practices have resulted in the resignation of Cecilia Anacona Garate  just a few days ago. These practices include - but are not limited to - the abuse of funds dedicated to improving irrigation infrastructure on indigenous Diaguita territory. Instead of going toward this, however, they have been spent on paying or financing lawyers regarding issues that have nothing to do with the activities for which the fund was earmarked , including other abuses, to not not say thefts. Another protocol, Barrick's Memorandum of Understanding with the "Diaguita" indigenous people is a farce in which, unfortunately, you are now involved due to the total lack of transparency which characterises this company.

I came to a meeting like this in 2008 and I can say that nothing has changed. In fact, I can say that the situation of indigenous rights and disrespect to Mother Earth has become worse.

However, while you continue believing that you can buy us with a part of your economic benefits and take us out of the poverty you think we live in, know that you are destroying the social fabric of the Original Peoples such as the Huascoaltinos and for that do not wonder why if nature should punish you financially. Barrick wants you to think that mining improves our quality of live. You have been fooled. And, while we have been fooled, both of us will lose the only thing money cannot buy.
